Course Description
Welcome to SOWK 3181, Practice Methods I: Social Work Practice with Individuals. In this eight week course you be introduced to the values, theoretical models and methods of generalist social work practice with individuals in preparation for SOWK 3182, Practice Methods II, and SOWK 3184, Practice Methods III, as well as SOWK 3482, Field Placement I and SOWK 3484, Field Placement II.
You will learn to develop communication, relationship and assessment skills in relation to practice with individuals and become familiar with the systems, developmental and strengths perspectives. We will explore the various roles and responsibilities of the social work helping process. Particular emphasis is given to issues of ethics, diversity, self-awareness and evidence-based interventions.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- CO1: Engage in collaborative social work practice with individuals and other professionals.
- CO2: Conduct biopsychosocial assessments with individuals and evaluate the influence of oppressive forces on a micro, mezzo, and macro level.
- CO3: Apply anti-oppressive social work skills to guide professional practice and self-assess practice skills through reflection.
- CO4: Evaluate culturally responsive intervention strategies with individuals to ensure they align with evidence-based models.
- CO5: Implement appropriate termination strategies to guide service delivery.
- CO6: Emplement appropriate termination strategies to guide service delivery.
