Course Overview
Study of major issues affecting mathematics education: analysis of the historical development of the school mathematics curriculum leading to current trends, issues, and problems; theory, methods, and techniques of assessment for improving mathematics learning; analysis of contemporary issues that impact the teaching of mathematics including, models of communication in the classroom, the needs of diverse learners, and the integration of technology in the classroom.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- CO #1: Summarize the major educational reform movements contributing to the evolution of the mathematics curriculum in the United States.
- CO #2: Articulate the mathematical competencies that underpin the mathematics curriculum including mathematical reasoning, communication, and problem solving.
- CO #3: Analyze the role of technology in the mathematics curriculum.
- CO #4: Implement various models of mathematical communication in the classroom.
- CO #5: Develop instructional activities in response to changing objectives as stated in the NCTM Standards and the NC Standard Course of Study.
- CO #6: Develop educational objectives for specific mathematical concepts.
- CO #7: Use a variety of assessment tools for informing teaching decisions in the mathematics classroom.
- CO #8: Recognize student diversity of responses to mathematical tasks, and their implications for learning and instruction.
- CO #9: Design and adapt instructional materials responsive to diverse learning styles among learners.
